Birthday Gifts from the Heart

By Lorraine

The sweetest gifts don’t come in fancy packages or cost a lot. Yet they have greater value and are cherished far more than expensive things. The best gifts are those that come from the heart. I was reminded about what is really important when I received birthday gifts from some really big hearts.

At first, I titled this post, Birthday Gifts from Little Hearts. It wasn’t right because the gifts came from LITTLE people with BIG hearts.

Birthday plans

I had a birthday this past Friday. My husband planned a day trip for just the two of us to celebrate. But because this is a crazy, busy time for us working on several big projects that require learning lots of new and complicated things, I asked if he wouldn’t mind changing his plans. A day with him home, beside me, working on these big projects would be a great help.

After a quick breakfast, we spent the morning tackling our list of responsibilities. We took a break for a late-afternoon lunch. Then, it was back to work moving at what seemed like a snail’s pace.

Our daughter, Jamie invited us to her home for coffee and dessert that evening. I felt the temptation to pass and continue on, chiseling away at our to-do list. Not wanting to dismiss her thoughtfulness, we got into the car that evening and drove over. As we pulled up to their house, we were met with smiling faces as the kids ran to the car to greet us, confirming the blessings we would have missed had we stayed home.

Passing through to the kitchen, I couldn’t help but notice some gift bags on the dining room table. Chloe and Jethro were sitting on the table too, with gushy smiles on their cherub-like faces. They could hardly contain their excitement. They had gifts for me. Gifts especially created and chosen, by them, just for me.

The joy in their countenance was a gift in itself. They even squabbled over who’s gift I should open first. It was decided I would open Jethro’s as he pushed a gift bag toward me. That grinning face with his one adorable dimple melted away the cares of the day.

Jet gave me one of his favorite toy airplanes. The one with the broken wing and missing wheels. He remembered my recent London trip and how much fun we had. He included a little plastic piece of pretend pink and chocolate cake.

Chloe was equally enthusiastic about her gift. Imagine what it meant to her as she inserted a neatly folded dollar bill, her weekly allowance, into an envelope with a picture she drew. I laughed when she told me the picture was of her and I at a bank!

As if that wasn’t enough of a treasure, she made a game for us to play. Complete with a slime pond with icky bubbles, a monster and the gross items he likes to devour like a moldy ice cream cone and stinky socks. All of this came in a gift bag she embellished with artwork.

Keri, who also shares an August birthday, found a perfect keepsake book that we will complete together. She has already filled in some of the pages. This thoughtful girl sought and found a perfect gift for me.

Keri wrapped my gift and in paper and created a lovely foil rose with gold ribbons.

Yes, I am dreadfully behind but I’ll catch up. Maybe. My to-do list that is too long will probably never get shorter. But I will enjoy every gift that comes my way. Every gesture of kindness. Every cheeky smile. Every conversation. Every hug from outstretched arms big and small. Every givers gift. Because, really, that is what’s important.

I can’t end without sharing this pic of baby Joelle with her favorite person. As soon as she sees him, she wants no other. Out of my arms into his. Funny how little one make attachments.
Children’s children are a crown to the aged, and parents are the pride of their children.
