A perfect addition for brunch with hard-boiled, colored eggs. If you don’t use a bread machine you can make them using a stand mixer.

Hot Cross Buns

slightly adapted from AllRecipes.com

PRINT RECIPE

INGREDIENTS:
3/4 cup warm water (110 degrees F)
3 tablespoons butter
1 tablespoon instant powdered milk
1/4 cup sugar
3/8 teaspoon salt
1 egg
1 egg white
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon active dry yeast
3/4 cup dried currants

1/2 cup golden raisins

1/4 cup dried apricots, chopped
3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 tsp. nutmeg

dash of ground cloves

 

Egg Wash:

1 egg yolk
2 tablespoons water

 

Frosting:

1/2 cup powdered sugar
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 teaspoons milk

 

  • DIRECTIONS:
    Put warm water, butter, skim milk powder, 1/4 cup sugar, salt, egg, egg white, flour, and yeast in bread maker and start on dough program.
  • When 5 minutes of kneading are left, add currants, raisins, apricots and cinnamon. Leave in machine till double.
  • Punch down on a lightly oiled* surface, cover, and let rest 10 minutes.
  • Shape into 12 balls and place in a greased 9×12-inch pan. Cover and let rise in a warm place till double, about 35-40 minutes.
  • Mix egg yolk and 2 tablespoons water. Brush on balls.
  • Bake at 375 degrees F (190 degrees C) for 20 minutes. Remove from pan immediately and cool on wire rack.
  • To make crosses: mix together confectioners’ sugar, vanilla, and milk. Brush a cross on each cooled bun.
    Servings per Recipe: 12 Calories: 218

 

Make dough without a bread machine

  • If you don’t have a bread machine you can make Hot Cross Buns using a mixer:
  • Using a stand mixer, combine warm water and yeast in the bowl of the mixer and let soften for about 5 minutes.
  • Add flour, milk powder, sugar, salt, egg, and egg white. Mix on low speed using the dough hook, scraping the dough down occasionally, for 10 minutes.
  • Add the softened butter, cinnamon, and currants and mix for an additional 5 minutes.
  • Transfer the dough to a greased bowl, cover it with plastic wrap and a kitchen towel, and allow it to rise until doubled, about 1 hour.
  • Place the dough onto a lightly oiled* surface and punch down; cover, and let rest 10 minutes.
  • Shape the dough into 12 balls and place in a greased 9×12-inch pan. Cover and let rise in a warm place till double, about 35-40 minutes.
  • Mix egg yolk and 2 tablespoons water. Brush on dough balls.
  • Bake at 375 degrees F for 20 minutes. Remove from pan immediately and cool on wire rack.
  • To make crosses: mix together confectioners’ sugar, vanilla, and milk. Brush a cross on each cooled bun.

* I work and shape the bread dough on a lightly oiled surface and find little sticking. If you prefer, work on a lightly floured surface.

    I had a customer who would ask for hot cross buns every year. She would keep asking until I got them in. They came in a case of 240 roll and she would buy one pack of 6 every year. The majority of the other 234 rolls ended up getting reduced because no one wanted them. Yours look way better than the ones we got
