Vintage Silent Night Counted Cross Stitch

By Lorraine

Counted Cross stitch from a vintage pattern book titled, Christmas in Miniature by Gloria Steele and Pat Carson. This Vintage Silent Night Counted Cross Stitch is a favorite piece of mine made way back in 1990. I used to do a lot of counted cross-stitch but my eyes don’t want to help me see those tiny little holes anymore.

This year the stitchery is being displayed on our fireplace mantle.

There is something very significant as the congregation lifts up one voice of praise to God for sending His Son from heaven to earth.
Looking about the room and seeing families standing close together, their faces aglow by the golden flame is always a moving moment of the season.

“Silent Night” (German: Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht) is a popular Christmas carol. The original lyrics of the song Stille Nacht were written in German by the Austrian priest Father Josef Mohr and the melody was composed by the Austrian headmaster Franz Xaver Gruber.

The carol was first performed in the Nikolaus-Kirche (Church of St. Nicholas) in Oberndorf, Austria on December 24, 1818. Mohr had composed the words much earlier, in 1816, but on Christmas Eve brought them to Gruber and asked him to compose a melody and guitar accompaniment for the church service

The carol has been translated into over 44 languages. It is sometimes sung without musical accompaniment.
The song was sung simultaneously in English and German by troops during the Christmas truce of 1914, as it was one of the few carols that soldiers on both sides of the front line knew.
The song has been recorded by over 300 artists.

About the pattern

NOTE:  I have been asked many times if I know where the pattern for this counted cross stitch project came from or where it can be obtained.  It took some searching to find that it is from a pamphlet titled, Christmas in Miniature by Gloria Steele and Pat Carson copyright 1978.  I have found copies on eBay. Just search for the pamphlet by its title to see what is currently available.

Your cross stitch is so beautiful and Silent Night is my favorite Christmas song. We sing it at the end of our Christmas Eve service and light candles too. It is a lovely moment. Our pastor shares that just as the light gets brighter and brighter with each candle that's lit, so would the world get brighter with each "new life" that embraces the birth of our risen Lord.

My home church always ended Christmas Eve's service with Silent Night and a sanctuary of candles. We then proceeded outside onto the steps of the church as we sang. It always made me teary.

What a gorgeous cross stitch. Really lovely.

What a beautiful piece of stitchery!
I remember my grandmother singing Silent Night to me in her native (German) tongue! I miss that.
Thanks for the bit of history on the song, also!
    Blessings!
