New Year’s Eve Time Capsule

By Lorraine

Create a New Year's eve time capsule with FREE printables and begin a family tradition to be enjoyed in the future. Look back and reminisce on thoughts, reflections and goals. Especially meaningful as children grow.  Do you have a special New Year’s Eve tradition? Partying with friends? A dinner out with a sweetheart? A cozy night with your guy or an evening with the kids snuggled together in jammies trying to stay awake to watch the ball drop?  Maybe this year you might consider adding  a new tradition to the festivities by creating a New Year’s eve time capsule.

I knew it was time to to make a new time capsule when recently one of our daughters asked if I still had the one we made years ago. Waaayy back to welcome in the year, 2000! I guess it was inspired by Y2K.  Remember that?!? Well, we all continued into the year with no catastrophes, ate our survival rations and yes, of course, I still have the time capsule pages the kids filled out!

Sweet memories

Precious words and thoughts in their childhood handwriting

Oh, just to see the handwriting is enough to make my heart smile. And to read their long ago thoughts, feelings and opinions on topics of the day. Treasures for sure!

Multi generational

So this year we are all writing down a new page to look on in the future. These new pages will be stored away to be brought to light as more years pass. New views and thoughts and new little people pages to add to the family time capsule.

Especially meaningful as children grow.  I have created multi-generational pages to be used by us old fogey’s, the now adult kids, and the grand kids. Even the little tots and preschool kiddos have a page where they can scribble, draw or paste pictures to be included in the capsule.

The adult page is more reflective with questions about the passing year and looking ahead to the future.

Storing You Time Capsule

You can make this a really cool family activity by actually burying the pages in a safe, weather-proof container. I can imagine how exciting this would be for the kids as you ring in the new year! Just don’t forget to mark the spot you buried it or draw an easy-to-read map using the page included in this set.

If you don’t live where burying the capsule is an option or rather not go that route, you can simply add the completed pages to a large envelope and store in a file cabinet, drawer or closet.

Make you own storage canister

Especially meaningful as children grow.  Use the cover page of this printable set and an empty Pringles can. Be sure to wipe the inside of the empty can so there is no grease residue that would soil the paper pages. Further assurance would be to insert the pages into a plastic bag, tie closed and then place into the container. The can is a little taller than a sheet of computer paper, but a strip of paper on the top and bottom solves that problem.

Especially meaningful as children grow.  Run a seem of double sided adhesive down the edge or use scotch tape to secure the paper to the can. Choose a date that the container will be opened and the contents made available to read. On that designated date, you will enjoy opening it up and the laughter, fun and heartwarming moments by remembering days and ages past.

Great idea! I’ve celebrated New Year’s Eve with friends from my study group since 1999. We used to be a big group, but now we are only four. Still a good time, and sweet memories. Wishing you a very happy and healthy new year!
