Baby Sock Roses

A baby sock rosebud bouquet is a really sweet way to welcome a new one into the world. Baby sock roses are quick and easy to make and a very pretty way to decorate for a baby shower.

Getting started

Here are some of the supplies needed to make the rosebud bouquet. See below for complete list.

Socks with stretchy cuffs like the ones shown in this post work well for making the flowers.

Start by lifting the sock cuff and flattening the sock.

Beginning at the toe edge, softly roll to the top of the sock.

The roll doesn’t need to be super tight.

Separate the top edge of the sock.

Take the top edge of the sock and turn it over onto the roll.

Fiddle a little until you have your desired flower shape. 

You can gently pull the center to form a longer bud or smush it a little for a flatter blossom.

Continue in the same manner with all of the socks.

Adding the stems

To make the bouquet or posies, the buds will need to be attached to a stem. I like to use lollipop sticks because I like the white color. You could use faux flower stems if you like. Nudge the stick in the fold of the bud being careful not to push upward too far.

I found the stemmed sock roses just secure enough to tuck onto the floral foam without tying. The addition of baby’s breath kept everything snug.  If you would like to make the arrangement more secure, it would be best to use a length of yarn tied tightly around the sock and stick.

Take a 10-inch piece of yarn and tie it around the base of the rosebud; tie into a small bow and trim if desired. You could use thin ribbon in matching or a contrasting color.  I like using yarn because its slight stretchy-ness helps keep the bow tight.

Floral tape is another option but I did not want to use it on the socks and I did not want the green showing.

Finishing the bouquet

Fill your bucket or container with floral foam cut to fit.

I used a piece of tissue paper to cover the foam but Easter grass or gift grass would work too. Using a skewer to make a pilot hole in the foam, insert each sock rose. Tuck in silk leaves, flowers or baby’s breath to fill in any gaps.

SUPPLIES

• Baby socks
• yarn or 1/8-inch ribbon in matching or contrasting color
• lollipop sticks in desired length 
• Container for arrangement (small bucket, flower pot, vintage baby plant holder, wooden box are all ideas)
• baby’s breath (Gypsophila) or other real or silk flowers or leaves
• floral foam
• tissue paper
• gift grass to cover floral foam

Fill tiny cups or containers with a small piece of floral foam and arrange the rosebuds, greenery and a few snippets of babies breath.

Intersperse the sweet posies on the buffet table or at individual place settings.
