Relationships with Adult Children

By Lorraine

A conversation on nurturing strong, healthy relationships with adult children and their spouses with a mom of 8 adult children of her own.As a mom, we want nothing more than a strong, loving relationship with our adult children and their spouses. One that is respectful, fun and caring. I recently had a insightful conversation with Joanne Eisenhart, a mom to 8 grown and married children.

A conversation on nurturing strong, healthy relationships with adult children and their spouses with a mom of 8 adult children of her own. This was our forth session in the Aging with Grace series and this was the topic we discussed.

About Joanne

Joanne, married 41 years with 8 grown and married children and 29 grandchildren, brings much experience and insight to our conversation. She and her husband have been serving in church leadership for more than 35 years, have lead Sunday school departments, youth ministries, large evangelistic outreaches, worked as a marriage facilitators, lead women’s ministry and church planting.

They have authored a book titled, Arrows, that goes into depth about how important it is to have a healthy perspective of family and children.

Relationships with Adult Children

The focus topic was a conversation on nurturing strong, healthy relationships with our adult kids that also includes their spouses.

Joanne was a joy to speak with as she shared her thoughts and experience with adult child relationships.

She talked about boundaries and why they are important, shared how to develop deep listening skills and gave suggestions for having those difficult conversations.

Joanne went over the main goal of having a better relationship and areas that hinder that. Things like the need for apologizing, not being overbearing, or undermining and playing favorites.

We chatted about honoring the boundaries in grandparenting citing examples we can easily fall into. And we ended our conversation remembering the importance of prayer, using Scripture and the holding to hope we find there.
