Life Overflowing

The days have been so busy I’m not sure where to begin.
Recapping some of the recent happenings…

A few days after Chloe’s birth, Caleb celebrated his 4th birthday. He was most happy all day and each thing he said seemed to come out in song.
Amid everything else, we had the roof replaced. It was a bit unnerving to have the house draped in dark plastic while workers tore off the old roof making a racket for those inside, but now we have a roof that should last longer than we do.
There was an unexpected return to the hospital for Jamie but baby Chloe was allowed to be there too. I gave her her first bath on the tiny counter in the bathroom while Pop-Pop snapped a few pics with Jamie’s camera phone.
This little dear didn’t give out a peep as I jostled and ruffled her trying to keep her warm in a less than ideal space. I couldn’t refrain from kissing those soft baby cheeks.
Jamie’s hospital stay brought Jill, Brad and kids down to lend a hand and give opportunity for Cousin~time.
Some more lovin’ and a primrose and hyacinth announcing spring is on the way.
We watched Keri and Noah at Salao Soccer.
Jamie is home now and feeling much better. So good, that we all met at the playground to enjoy the warm sunshine (even thought the air was still nippy). Jill, Brad and kids will be heading back to NY in the morning.

Update: Jamie was readmitted to the hospital for a few problems but Baby Chloe was able to be with her Momma. They  are back home again and enjoying an unplanned visit from Jill and family.

Cream Cheese Pound Cake

Cream Cheese Pound Cake is a showstopper dessert that is moist and delicious. Serve plain or dress it up with snowy white frosting and top with strawberries.In less than 20 minutes you can have this moist and dense pound cake ready to go into the oven. Perhaps it is the low and long baking time, or the addition of cream cheese that keeps this cream cheese pound cake from being dry. I have made it numerous times and have never had a problem. It is full of flavor by itself but if you prefer to dress it up, you can add a snowy white glaze and top with sliced strawberries.Continue Reading

Not every recipe comes out of the oven looking just right.

John thinks this (partially) braided bread looks like Lake Michigan and he unselfishly volunteered to eat the less than perfect part all by himself!
Made from my basic sweet-dough recipe, I filled this braided bread with cream cheese and a hint of lemon.

Sweet-Dough Recipe 

ingredients:
1 large egg plus enough water to measure 1 cup
1/4 cup butter, softened
1 1/2 tsp. salt
3 cups bread flour
3 Tbs. Nonfat dry Milk
3 Tbs. sugar
2 tsp. Bread Machine Yeast
Add all of the ingredients in the order recommended by manufacturer of your bread machine (usually wet ingredients followed by dry ingredients and ending with the yeast).  Set the machine to dough setting.  When complete, remove dough from machine and allow to rest, covered for 5 minutes.

FILLING: (from Taste of Home)
2 packages (one 8 ounces, one 3 ounces) cream cheese, softened
1/2 cup sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon grated lemon peel
GLAZE:
1/2 cup confectioners’ sugar
1/4 teaspoon vanilla 
2 to 3 teaspoons milk
In a small bowl, beat all the filling ingredients until fluffy.
Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface; roll into a 14-in. x 12-in. rectangle. Place on a greased baking sheet.
Spread filling down center third of rectangle. On each long side, cut 1-in.-wide strips, 3-in. into center. Starting at one end, fold alternating strips at an angle across filling. Seal end. Cover and let rise for 30 minutes.
Bake at 375° for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown. Cool on a wire rack. Combine confectioners’ sugar, vanilla and enough milk to achieve drizzling consistency; drizzle over warm bread. 
NOTES:

*I roll the dough right on a silicone pad. After filling, cutting and braiding, I then lift the pad onto a baking sheet. I find it easier than transferring the filled dough onto a greased baking sheet. When using the silicone pad I do not need to flour the surface.
*If bread is browning too quickly, tent with foil.

My little buddy keeps a close eye on me and comes-a-running when I slice an apple or banana in hopes I will share with him.

Think On These Things

It has been on my heart for a while to consistently make a faith-centered post focusing on some little gem that came from my Bible reading, a quote, a song, a book, a poem or a conversation from the week.
Too often something special touches my heart but quickly gets lost in the busyness of the day.  
I hope to do this each Sunday (posting Saturday evening).
I want to keep it short – not wordy or in-depth. Just something that will remind me of His precious Truths.
If you think you might want to join me, mention it in your comment. If there is an interest, maybe I will set up a link so others can share tidbits of pearls that God is sharing in their lives.

Stepping Out

 We attended a beautiful wedding this Saturday of a dear young man that works with John.
His lovely wife was stunning to all and especially to her beloved as she gracefully walked up the isle to him to begin a lifetime together.
Everything about the day was elegant and full of special moments.
We were honored to be able share this day with this
a very sweet couple.

And, yes, I wore red shoes.
I think the last pair of red shoes I wore were Buster Brown’s.
I found the little black dress on sale at Christmastime when I wasn’t really looking for a dress.  The price was so right I brought it home.
But it needed something.
My sweet, beautiful and fun-loving friend, Susan told me to stop by and she would see if she had some accessories to help me dress-up the outfit.

Just for fun, I brought along a dress my niece loaned me.  A sleek, long black dress with boa feathers that had to be the most amusing dress I have ever tried on.  Yes, I looked like Cruella Deville and left tiny feathers whenever I moved about, but oh, what FUN!

After our laugh (and Susan’s suggestion I not wear the boa dress to Bible study) she shared a beautiful silk scarf that was perfect with the dress. So I didn’t have to continually fidget to keep the scarf in place, I tied a knot in front.
We agreed a long, silver necklace with chunky beads that her son bought for her worked too.

My sister, my sister-in-law and my daughter, Erin all suggested red shoes.
So off to DSW and guess what I found on the clearance shelf.
Not just a pair of red shoes but also, at 70% off, a red bag.
Still hesitant, I chatted with the lady at the register as I paid for the red shoes and a sensible pair of black patent leather shoes .  This older, soft-spoken, reserved lady told me,
“Wear the red ones.  There’s nothing like red shoes.”

And to perk up my dashing husband’s suit, Abbey and I found a new red tie for him!

Job Done

Jamie asked if we would like to stop by her house on the way home from our visit to Philly .
She and Josh have been working hard gutting and re-doing the second floor of their cape cod house making room for their growing family.
It was taken down to the studs and new walls, electricity, windows and lighting were installed.
New carpet had just been laid and the rooms were put back together.
The kids were so excited to chill out and show us their new rooms.
 Keri Jill
 She feels like a princess with a chandelier in her room.
  Since the weather was so warm she was able to stand by an open window to watch the birds.
 Pop-Pop trying to wheedle (unsuccessfully) a kiss from Cambrie as Keri comes running to give him some birthday lovin’.
Noah and Silas were arranging their stuffed animals just so when we arrived.
The kids were so content to play while we sat and chatted.
Caleb John has the new dormer for his own space.
My dear Jamie taking a well earned rest after much painting and working to get this project complete before baby girl arrives.
Silas was showing Pop-Pop some of his homeschool computer work as the other kids gathered around. Little Cambrie ooched in for some help with her Lego’s.
