Crochet Chocolate Diorama Easter Egg

By Lorraine

Peek inside this sweet crocheted chocolate diorama Easter egg decorated with faux frosting and embroidered scrolls. Cute pattern for holiday décor tablescapes or filling Easter baskets.Crochet Chocolate Diorama Easter Egg, is a crochet project my mom and I came up with during one of her visits when I was living in Ohio. We were several states away from one another and I was expecting my first child. By the time we were finished we had crocheted a basket full of sweet Easter decorations that I bring out and displayed each spring.

Faux Frosting

Follow the pattern below using these photos as a guide for adding the faux frosting and decorations.

Materials:

  • worsted-weight yarn.  I used chocolate brown and small amount of white but you can use whatever yarn you like as size is not important.
  • Choose a hooks size for a nice tight-ish stitch. I used F hook
  • various color embroidery floss
  • embroidery needle
  • satin ribbon for bow
  • tiny figure for diorama
  • tiny flowers
  • fiberfill

Crochet Chocolate Diorama Easter Egg Pattern

NOTE: When working in rounds, I mark the end of each round with a piece of contrasting yarn and move it as I complete each round.

Starting at the bottom of the egg

ch 3.  Join with sl st in 3rd ch from hook to form a ring
Rnd 1: Work 8 sc in ring
Rnd 2: *sc in next sc, inc in next sc. Repeat from *around (12 sc)
Rnd 3: Repeat rnd 2 (18 sc)
Rnd 4: sc in each sc around, increasing 1 sc in every 3rd sc. (24 sc)
Rnd 5: work even for one round  (24 sc)
Rnd 6: sc in each sc around; increasing in every 4th sc. (30 sc)
Rnd 7-8: work even for two rounds (30 sc)
Rnd 9: sc in each sc around, increasing in every 10th sc. (33 sc)
Rnd 10-15: work even (33 sc)

Rnd 16: sc in each sc around decreasing in every 10th sc (30 sc)Begin stuffing your egg.  You will need to add more at the end but I think you can get a better shape if you begin at this point.

Rnd 17: Work even (30 sc).
Rnd 18: sc in each sc decreasing every 5th sc (25 sc)
Rnd 19-20: work even (25)
Rnd 21: switch to white yarn. Sc in each around decreasing every 9th sc (18 sc). Do NOT cut yarn.

At this point, refer to the photo below as you will slip stitch around the outside of the egg creating a ‘frosting’.
To help keep stitching even, I use a rubber band as a guide.
Slip stitch evenly around the egg. End off at the opening; finish off.

Pattern for Crochet Chocolate Diorama Easter Egg is a cute chocolate-like egg with a little opening and faux frosting mimicking eggs that filled my childhood Easter basket.

Finishing:

  • Using embroidery floss in colors of your choice, add Lazy-Daisy and French Knots to the top side of your chocolate egg being sure to conceal your knots inside the egg.
  • Stitch on a bow to the top and add figure and flowers, as desired, in the opening of the egg.

Adding embroidery stitches

Lazy Daisy and French Knots in springtime colored embroidery floss I’ve included the following links for convenience if you need supplies for this project but want to mention I have not personally ordered the bunnies or the ducks. They look nice from the description but can’t vouch personally. When I made these diorama Easter eggs, I had a hard time finding tiny pieces to fit into the opening.

Very, very special and pretty Easter egg! Thank you so much for sharing! I was so inspired that I grab the crochet hook immediately. The pattern was wonderful. Yet, there was one thing about the last row… In case someone is wondering the same thing.

    The pattern says:
Rnd 21: switch to white yarn. Sc in each around decreasing every 9th sc (18 sc). Do NOT cut yarn.

Round 20 had 25 st, so I noticed that to reach 18 stitches in last round, I needed to decrease every 4th stitch.

Thank you so much for these sweet Easter inspirations you've on this blog! With the best wishes!!!

Oh, my goodness. One of my treasured possessions is my collection of Easter eggs. Actually, it's only been MY possession for 12 years now–it was built over a number of years by my mother, who passed away when she was only 58 years old. Many of her eggs were given to her my grandmother, who was amazing with a crochet hook. They both would have loved these eggs! 🙂

Such sweet memories with your Mom. You are so creative to make one of these with crochet! Mama had a few eggs done this way that were Christmas ornaments – one with a deer, and one with the Nativity.

Your blog needs to be published into a coffee table book, Lorraine. I've never known anyone with so many talents. It's always a pleasure to see what you post next!
