Crochet Easter Decorations

Crochet in pretty pastel colors and fill a basket or bowl for a lovely and decorative holiday centerpiece. Pattern works up quickly and uses just a little yarn.

Did you see the cute crochet Chocolate Diorama Easter Egg, and the Crochet Easter Egg that opens in half? These little eggs are a solid and stuffed with fiberfill.

The Easter eggs in the photos were crocheted by my mom way back in 1978 and are adapted from a pattern from an old Woman’s Day Magazine.

Materials:

  • yarn of choice in any color you like.  My mom made hers smaller by using a sport-weight yarn.  You can use a worsted-weight yarn for larger eggs.
  • Choose a hooks size for a nice tight-ish stitch.
  • fiberfill

NOTE: When working in rounds, I mark the end of each round with a piece of contrasting yarn and move it as I complete each round.

Starting at the bottom of the egg

ch 3.  Join with sl st in 3rd ch from hook to form a ring
Rnd 1: Work 8 sc in ring
Rnd 2: *sc in next sc, inc in next sc. Repeat from *around (12 sc)
Rnd 3: Repeat rnd 2 (18 sc)
Rnd 4: sc in each sc around, increasing 1 sc in every 3rd sc. (24 sc)
Rnd 5: work even for one round  (24 sc)
Rnd 6: sc in each sc around; increasing in every 4th sc. (30 sc)
Rnd 7-8: work even for two rounds (30 sc)
Rnd 9: sc in each sc around, increasing in every 10th sc. (33 sc)
Rnd 10-15: work even (33 sc)

Rnd 16: sc in each sc around decreasing in every 10th sc (30 sc)Begin stuffing your egg.  You will need to add more at the end but I think you can get a better shape if you begin at this point.

Rnd 17: Work even (30 sc).
Rnd 18: sc in each sc decreasing every 5th sc (25 sc)
Rnd 19-20: work even (25)
Rnd 21: Sc in each around decreasing every 4th sc (20 sc). Continue stuffing your egg.
Rnd 22: Repeat last rnd. (16 sc)
Rnd 23: Sc in each sc around, decreasing every 3rd sc (12 sc)
Rnd 24: Sc in each sc around, decreasing every other stitch for two rounds till closed.  Break off.

You can leave your egg plain or decorate with ribbon or other embellishments.  My mom crocheted a length of chain stitches and then tacked it onto the egg and finished by tying into a flower.

The cute critters below were also made from the patterns in that same Woman’s Day magazine.

Crochet Easter eggs, bunny, duck and chick are soft and cute for children and decorating. Vintage patterns are easy and work up quickly.
You can see the difference in size of the bunnies.  My mom’s little white bunny was stitched using a baby yarn and my brown rabbit was done with worsted weight.  Mommy always crocheted very tight and my rabbit looks to be rather loose.

Here are some closeup photos.

Sweet vintage pattern for crochet Easter eggs. Crochet in pretty pastel colors and fill a basket or bowl for a lovely and decorative holiday centerpiece. The magazine article also included this duck pattern. I remember Mommy and the time we spent together crocheting. I am sure we were doing some laughing and some ripping out and re-doing as we worked through the patterns. I am especially happy to still have her work.

Sweet memories of crocheting with my mom to create adorable Easter decorations. The patterns are now vintage that we used to crochet pastel eggs, an alert bunny, a tiny chick and a dapper duck in soft pastel yarn. Here is a page from the original Woman’s Day Magazine. I was expecting our first child and we had recently move from our families in New Jersey to Ohio. It was quite a winter that year with something like 60 plus-inches of snow.  Mommy and I spent a lot of fun hours making these crochet items that are more special than ever to me.

You mentioned you were sent the instructions for the animals and egg as well. How would one get those? I have a set I made in 1978 (I put each child's name on the egg), but have moved and haven't found the instructions. Thanks for your help

I really would love the pattern for the bunny. I would like to make it for my grandmother (90) and my daughter.

I would love to have this pattern from 1978. My mother made these for my cousins and was in the process of making ours when my sister passed away and she never finished. She lost all her patterns in a fire this last year and I know that having this one would mean a lot to her.

I have these patterns. When I saw your picture I remembered making them for my son who will be 31 this month. I got my old folder of patterns out and sure enough, I had torn the pages out of the magazine.

Wouldn't my grandchildren love to see these sweet critters! I'll have to have my 84 year old mother help me. She is a master at crochet.

Absolutely adorable! What fun to make a "chocolate" bunny in place of the one we don't need. You make the greatest tutorials. Your Pineapple Spoonbread looks wonderful–a perfect addition to Easter Dinner.

I taught myself to crochet years ago but I'm still finding things that I've been doing wrong so I would love to see your video when you get it done.

These are so adorable L. I can cook, sew, knit and do handwork and the only thing I really can't do is crochet. I have tried several times and don't have the patience! Know how much I appreciate each of your talents…you do everything so well!
