Easter Butter Lamb

Create a sweet little Easter butter lamb, covered in woolly curls with easy how-to directions. Butter is shaped into a lamb either by hand or in a lamb-shaped mold. You might want make one for your celebration. Try these easy directions to create your own little Easter butter lamb covered in woolly curls. It is cute, decorative and symbolic for your holiday table.

Tips for making an Easter butter lamb

I tried several kitchen gadgets to create the “wooly” curls. I found using a handheld grater created long curls.  Use the tip of a knife and tweezers, place the curls onto the  lamb form, tucking and shaping as you go. You might also try making the curls using a garlic press.
 
Butter from the refrigerator makes long softer pieces.  Butter from the freezer creates short, tight pieces.  I kind of mixed them to fill in gaps and cover the body and head.
 
My warm fingers worked to smooth the lambs snout and face.
 
Two whole cloves are tucked in for eyes.
 
When the little butter lamb is finished, garnish by placing parsley around the base so he looks like he is resting in grass.  A few primroses are beginning to bloom in the garden so I added them for a bit of springtime color.
 

Sculpting a butter lamb

Butter is shaped into a lamb and is cute, decorative and symbolic for your holiday table.Begin by cutting 1/3 off of one stick of butter (about 3 1/2-inches or a little less than 6 tablespoons. This piece will become the neck and head.

Place the large piece of butter on a serving plate. Position the smaller section vertically on the left side of the large piece.

Shape and trim as needed. I cut away a little of the butter so the neck isn’t too bulky.

From a second stick, cut a 1/4-inch piece and cut that in half diagonally forming a triangle.

Using a triangle for the nose, attach using softened butter. Set the remaining triangle aside to use for the butter curls.

Cut a diagonal slice from each end of the second butter stick. Spread softened butter on cut long sides; secure to back of head for ears.

To make the woolly curls, use a grater or garlic press. Working from the top down, use a toothpick and/or tweezers to curl and place onto the lamb body. If you find the butter softens too much while assembling, place it in refrigerator for 10 minutes or so to firm up a bit. Continue adding butter curls to cover the body, covering the butter sticks.

Insert cloves for eyes and add two dots of cinnamon on nose for nostrils. Refrigerate your butter lamb until serving.

Tucking in fresh parsley around the base of the lamb gives the appearance that it is sitting in grass. Add a few flowers, if desired.

How to Make an Easter Butter Lamb

What you will need:
  • 2 sticks cold butter (1/2 pound)
  • 1 tablespoon butter, softened
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 whole cloves
  • Fresh parsley sprigs and edible pansies or other flowers to garnish and decorate
