Great is Thy Faithfulness

Have you ever questioned God’s faithfulness? Did you ever think that He has left you or forsaken you? These are questions we sometimes are uncomfortable voicing or admitting. As you contemplate your answer, think of times of disappointment, loneliness, grief or despair. This is when we are most vulnerable to the thought that God had forsaken us. God uses His Word and sometimes a person, a quote, a book or even a hymn to remind us that He is and will always be faithful to His children. One of these classic hymns is my focus on today’s post… Great is Thy Faithfulness.

This old hymn remains popular today and is one of my favorites. The words “great is thy faithfulness” is from the Old Testament book of Lamentations 3:22-23:

Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed,
for his compassions never fail.
They are new every morning;

great is your faithfulness.

 
 

It is in the hard places, the difficult places, we can meditate on the words of this hymn and allow the Holy Spirit speak truth to us. Great is Thy Faithfulness.Have you ever wondered why the Almighty God of the universe has offered mankind to partake in His never ending love and faithfulness for all eternity? I have asked myself  ‘why’. Why would He want me, the one who forgets Him, sins against Him, and saddens Him all throughout the day. I can only come to one conclusion. He unconditionally loves me and desires to have a relationship with me. But even then, He is always faithful to me even when I am not always faithful to Him.

 

Yes, Great is thy Faithfulness

He continually provides for needs, gives guidance, shows unconditional love. All evidence of  His goodness. The refrain is so encouraging, ‘Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth’.  He comforts even though it is unwarranted. ‘Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide’ . His presence is cheering and guiding us on. ‘Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow’. When we feel weary and want to pack it in and give up, He wants comes along side and give the strength and hope to continue on.

And finally, ‘Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!’. An encouraging thought that He has a never-ending, treasure trove of blessing already in store just for us.  Ah, yes, Great Is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father! What wonderful words to help in these times.

Thomas O. Chisholm (1866-1960) wrote the poem in 1923 about God’s faithfulness over his lifetime. Chisholm sent the song to William Runyan (1870-1957) in Kansas, who was affiliated with both the Moody Bible Institute and Hope Publishing Company. Runyan set the poem to music, and it was published that same year by Hope Publishing Company and became popular among church groups. The song was exposed to wide audiences after becoming popular with Dr. William Henry Houghton of the Moody Bible Institute and Billy Graham, who used the song frequently on his international crusades. Since the middle 20th century, this hymn has been the university hymn of Cairn University which was formerly Philadelphia Biblical University and prior to that Philadelphia College of Bible, founded in 1913. source

There is no shadow of turning with Thee;
Though changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not
As Thou hast been Thou forever wilt be.
 
Great Is Thy faithfulness,
Great Is Thy faithfulness,
Morning by morning new mercies I see;
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided
Great is Thy Faithfulness, Lord unto me!
 
Summer and winter, and springtime and harvest,
Sun, moon, and stars in their courses above,
Join with all nature in manifold witness
To Thy great faithfulness, mercy, and love.
 
Great Is Thy faithfulness,
Great Is Thy faithfulness,
Morning by morning new mercies I see;
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided
Great is Thy Faithfulness, Lord unto me!
 
Pardon for Sin and a peace that endureth,

    This is one of my favorite hymns! I sang it often through the last years of my dear, little mother's life as she struggled with dementia. His faithfulness through her life and ministry didn't end when she began to 'fade'. Thank you for sharing this. I'm always blessed by how faithful He is! I'm reading through Psalms in my quiet time and the thing that constantly stands out is His faithfulness!

    So beautiful, yes great is the lord and his faithfulness to us. He loves us even when we are busy in the worldly chaos. Such an inspiring post and prayer.
