Heartland Pork and Apple Pie

By Lorraine

Easy recipe for heartland pork & apple pie, a lovely dinner entree made with purchased crust and flavored with onions sage and apples slices.I just learned that January 23rd is National Pie Day. Instead of a sweet pie, how about a savory meat pie with the complimentary combo of pork and apples to celebrate. Heartland Pork and Apple Pie goes together easily (especially if using refrigerated pie crust) and is great served on these single-digit temperature days.  I even tossed in some leftover carrots from a corned beef brisket I made this week.

A little like a pot pie, this savory pie begins with ground pork.

  • 1/2 cup lower-sodium chicken broth
  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • 1/8 tsp. ground red pepper (cayenne) (I used black pepper)
  • 2 store-bought or homemade pie crusts
  • 2 medium tart apples, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 2 Tbs sugar
  • 1/4 tsp ground allspice
  • 1 egg plus 1 tablespoon milk for egg wash

What a lovely little bit of serendipity. I got up extra early this morning to find a recipe for something to bring to a potluck luncheon tomorrow – needing to shop and cook this evening after work. This will be perfect, as I will be able to make it this evening and bake it just before going to the luncheon. Thank you!
