Homemade Tomato Ketchup

By Lorraine

A favorite American condiment, homemade tomato ketchup is easy, inexpensive and better than store-bought. Recipe uses items you probably already have and is cooked right on the stovetop with just 20 minutes cook time.Did you ever think to make homemade tomato ketchup? Neither did I. I’d be embarrassed to tell you all of the food I like served with ketchup. It started as a child when my mom used it to encourage me to eat different foods and, well, I guess you’d say I just never outgrew my love for ketchup. And, apparently others like ketchup too. It is a favorite American condiment found in 97 percent of U.S. homes.

Easy and inexpensive to make

My daughter doesn’t share my love of ketchup so when I go to her home there is a chance she might not have any. (horrors!) But her kids like it. Recently, when they had run out, my son-in-law, Josh, made a batch of homemade ketchup. It is now their favorite.

This ketchup tastes very similar to brand-name tomato ketchup and I, being a ketchup connoisseur, think it is just right! Josh shared with me the recipe he followed to make ketchup. I modified it just a bit by adding a few more spices. In addition to topping burgers, hot-dogs and French fries, this tangy and sweet condiment is used as an ingredient in sauces, beans and soups.

I should not be surprised, but I must tell you that I grew up with the same "ketchup" rules. My mother served ketchup with all the things you have listed, and to this day, I find myself doing the same. This was an interesting post! The French fry and ketchup picture drew me in. One of my favorite food combinations of all times!!! And to think that now I can easily make my own. Thank you for sharing that recipe.

By the way, we always pronounced it as "ketchup". Just recently the twins asked for ketchup for their mac/cheese:).
