Pizza Toast

By Lorraine

Pizza Toast is a unique family food creation passed down through the generations. Simple, tangy, tasty and delicious, this dad proudly prepares his childhood treat with all seriousness.Do you have a special food that is unique to your family? Maybe something unusual or passed down through the generations? My husband isn’t in the kitchen often but when he is, he makes his specialty. He calls it Pizza Toast.

Pizza Toast is a childhood memory for both John and for our children. It is something his Great-Aunt Kathryn showed him how to make and he has made it many times for us through the years.

Pizza Toast is tart and tasty

Pizza toast does not use tomato sauce like you might when making pizza bagels. Instead, ketchup is the condiment that provides the flavor base. It is what gives the unique twang to each bite making them pretty tasty. Sometimes when I am tired or not feeling well, John will make pizza toast for me and I just love nibbling on small bites and savoring the tangy flavor.

Begin with slices of bread and American cheese. Add a slice of cheese and squirt a dollop of ketchup onto each piece of bread.

Pizza Toast

  • Begin with sliced bread (potato bread is my favorite)
  • Layer with a slice or two of American cheese
  • Squeeze on a large dollop of ketchup
  • Intently spread to edges.
  • John emphasis’s the most important ingredient is garlic powder that he sprinkles on liberally.
  • Next comes a generous twist of the pepper mill.
  • Add Italian seasoning. He likes to use a heavy hand.
  • Inspect perfect coverage of spices.
  • Transfer bread to toaster with rack in upper position.
  • Toast for 3-5 minutes until heated and the cheese is perfectly melted and bubbly.

John’s Aunt Kathryn will be celebrating her 100th birthday this May. Photo above shows Aunt Kathryn at far right with her siblings, including John’s grandmother, Elsie (center)  along with brothers, Joe, Wes, Woody and John.

It does look like serious business. Ha! My husband doesn't make anything but fried eggs. When I was little, my Aunt Shirley would make us ketchup sandwiches on white bread. Sure was good back then. I do pizza on pita bread with tomato paste, garlic powder, black pepper, Italian seasoning and mozzarella cheese for the kids — but for me and Sam, I spread mascarpone cheese on pita bread, a tiny bit of tomato paste, slices of smoked salmon and a sprinkle of dill — after it is broiled, you squeeze some lemon juice on it. Delish! Best wishes, Tammy

My husband makes something that the kids loved as children but that I've never been able to like – Kraft Dinner with an onion, ground beef and ketchup. It's comfort food to him and became the same for the kids.
Your husband is delightful in the mosaic!

Anything pizza flavored…well, I'm all drools now. They look yummy, and he probably makes a great chef!!! Lucky you….my husband can accomplish a peanut butter and mayonnaise sandwich that'll turn my stomach. And he eats that contraption. I'd much rather have the pizza toast!!!
