This vintage pattern from Butterick has been around for a long time. My mom was an avid seamstress and a perfectionist.
Every seam was over-locked and every button securely attached. Our little fingers would be sore pushing those buttons through the tight buttonholes but those babies were never falling off. Her hard work paid off as the items she made lasted through generations of use.
1952 vintage pattern
This Little Bo Peep pattern was originally used to make a costume for my sister. Mom wrote the date, 1952, probably indicating the first time she used it.Ready to head out the door for trick or treating, mommy snapped a photo of me wearing the Little Bo Peep costume with a neighbor ghost and a cousin wearing a pirate costume made originally for my brother in 1952. The pirate costume has lasted and recently was worn by my brother’s grandson.
I just smile looking at these 1960 photos seeing the kitchen and parlor of that era. Little Bo Peep and my baby cousin pirate, Karen ready to go.
Removing the cummerbund, adding a vest and big bonnet, a slightly different costume was created for the following year. A basket of flowers replaced Little Bo Peeps staff.
The next generation
The bonnet is a bit droopy and a little lamb is included as my daughter, Jill continues the tradition of wearing the vintage costume.
Our thespian daughter, Jamie wore the costume in a school play.
to the third generation
Here is my sweet granddaughter, Keri Jill, feeling pretty special in Mom-Mom’s Little Bo Peep costume. She even found her lost sheep ♥
This costume, along with many others mommy made, have been loaned out to many cousins, neighbors and friends through the years. Though threadbare in places and less crisp than before, they are still making the rounds. This year, when my daughter’s friend told her that her little Gracie wanted to be Bo Peep for Halloween, she replied…

That is the coolest thing. What a legacy. I can't think of anyone else who has any comparable story to that one. What a great tale for doing your best.
Goodness me, your mother was quite the seamstress. I loved to see all those photos through the years, that was very special. I was interested to see that your granddaughter calls you Mom-Mom, because my boys called my mother Mum-mum (mum's mum)I take it yours has the same origin?
