Sloppy Joes Sandwiches

By Lorraine

A classic Sloppy Joes sandwich is popular with kids and adults alike. Easy and delicious on soft rolls. A favorite for a quick dinner, BBQ or cookout. There is a reason why Sloppy Joes have been around for so long and remain popular with kids and adults alike. Messiness aside, they taste really good! They are quick and easy to make and don’t require any special ingredients.

What are Sloppy Joes?

Basically Sloppy Joes is a combination of ground beef, onions, tomato sauce, Worcestershire sauce and seasonings that are simmered together creating a tasty mixture that is best served on a soft roll. Simplicity. Perfection. Happy eating.

Origin of Sloppy Joes

Cookbooks from the early 20th century have included recipes for sloppy Joes or similar dishes. They may have different names but similar ingredients. It has been suggested that the “loose meat sandwiches” that were sold in Sioux City, Iowa in the 1930’s were where sloppy Joes got their start.

My grandmother’s cookbook titled, The New American Cook Book from the 1940’s has a similar recipe for Cuban Beef Stew that contains stewed tomatoes, onions, seasonings and chopped beef.

Who Joe is or how it got into the title is also a mystery. What isn’t a mystery is the popularity of sloppy Joes.

A few years ago, I had a vege sloppy joe recipe I used to make that was so good. Even the kids loved it and you wouldn't tell there was no meat. I can't find that recipe for the life of me. :/ Have a fabulous Friday. Tammy

The sandwiches look so good. For some reason when I was a kid, I referred to sloppy joes as "meaties." We all still refer to them as that!!!

We haven't had Sloppy Joes for ages. We recently discovered Pulled Pork (thank you, all the cooking bloggers!) and love that treat!

You know we love sloppy joes. I made some recently and tried cutting back on the beef and adding cooked quinoa. It was a great addition and went over well with my hungry grand-kiddos. Thanks Lorraine!

I have always loved Sloppy Joes. Haven't had them for quite awhile. I'm fixing barbecued pulled pork on buns tonight. Similar, but not the same as Sloppy Joes. You made me think about making some soon.
