Tradition, History & Fun

By Lorraine

 It’s Chloe’s turn…
for a photo in Pop-Pop’s Christening outfit

joining her siblings and cousins in this sentimental family tradition.
Chloe’s Aunt Abbey was one of the firsts to wear this vintage outfit belonging to John
~*~
Abbey and her dad chilling on the sofa after work, looking so much alike 🙂
Amid the hectic summer schedule, John wanted to take a vacation day.
Last week, we shared a lovely day together strolling through the nearby historic town of Haddonfield.
We toured the Indian King Tavern Museum, where on September 1777, the Legislature of New Jersey unanimously resolved that thereafter the word “state” should be substituted for “colony” in all public writs and commissions.
On the second-floor assemble room of this historic building is where
The Great Seal of New Jersey was adopted
~*~
Haddonfield’s Indian King Tavern is one of New Jersey’s most historic buildings. Named for the local Lenape Indians, it is a premiere example of eighteenth-century colonial tavern architecture as well as the site where New Jersey was legally created.
In 1777, as clashing armies devastated Trenton, the Assembly reconvened in the Indian King to pass legislation officially creating an independent state and adopting its Great Seal. Legend has it that, throughout the 1780s, Dolley Payne — who later became First Lady Dolley Madison — was a frequent visitor. Source
Photos inside the building were not allowed.
~*~
Afterward our walk down the brick sidewalks and through many of the shops, we used a LivingSocial coupon for lunch at The British Chip Shop.
That evening, we relaxed on the sofa together while watching Driving Miss Daisy.
It was a perfect day!

Whirlwind

By Lorraine

As we get older, it seems we get busier and busier.  Our days have been filled with weddings, showers, graduations, parties, birthdays and get-togethers.  Nary a week goes by that we don’t have an opportunity to gather and celebrate life and milestones.
Our oldest grandson, Jared, graduated Thursday night from Middle School and is heading to high school in SeptemberContinue Reading

Toni and Joe

By Lorraine

I knew this day would be a very special one because the two individuals joining hands and hearts together are very special.  This was the day Toni and Joe exchange their vows to one another to be there for each other in all capacities for the rest of their lives.

Loving Those Shamrock Shake Mustache Smiles

By Lorraine

Not too sure why making shamrock shake mustache faces became a tradition here but these silly leprechauns always have a delightful time of it.

Succotash

By Lorraine

Don't turn away too quickly! Succotash is a combination of Lima beans and corn in cream and topped with bacon. It is a delicious Thanksgiving side dish. Succotash? Do you say, yes please or eww.  I can relate. You either love it or hate it. I went from yuck to yum. I inherited my love of succotash from my dad.

Weekend with the Boys

By Lorraine

They jumped in the leaves on Friday
They played football with Aunt Abbey in the afternoon
They snuggled Friday night
They helped blow and rake all those leaves Saturday morning
They hauled leaves to the curb
They dumped leaves and someone noticed a tree to climb
And climb he did
They ate the whole batch of Peanut Butter Spritz made from my friend, Lynn @Happier Than a Pig in Mud’s recipe

They watched The Wizard of Oz Saturday evening
Noah and Pop-Pop poured casts of sharks

Noah painted and glazed his sharks

They watched church service on-line Sunday morning because Pop-Pop’s bones were aching from all the raking on Saturday as well as standing two hours watching soccer as FBC Mt. Laurel Campus beat FBC Haddonfield Campus in the Champion Tournament   🙂

They tried on the spectacles worn by their Great-Pop-Pop when he was just their age about 85 years ago

And then they all went home.
The End!

Grandchildren and Children

By Lorraine

We had a great week with kids.
Jill and family are heading back to Central New York tomorrow.
How we enjoyed every minute they were here!
John and Brad worked really hard doing some
landscaping in the front yard on Wednesday.
After a long day and warm (80 degree) temps, Jamie and kids
joined us for Pizza and Cheesesteaks for dinner and
ice-cream cones for dessert.
It was a perfect evening to eat outside and play ball!

Baby Cambrie toddled about.
John took a second vacation day today and we headed to Philly
 to see the Liberty Bell
 and the Betsy Ross House
This evening, the little ones were left with a babysitter and we all met at Outback Steak House for a late dinner.  It was so much fun!
It was hard getting pictures in the subdued light, but everyone was together
and
my heart was very happy!

Happy Birthday!

By Lorraine

Happy 19th Birthday to my precious, Abbey!
Looking forward to spending the whole day together just celebrating

YOU!

Abbey’s 1st Birthday ~ Born September 28, 1991
Here is a page from Abbey’s baby book highlighting her 1st birthday.
It includes a prayer from a little pamphlet titled Dad, We Really Need You that Dr. James Dobson and his wife, Shirley prayed for their children and one that I have been compelled to pray for my own children through the years. I think it was published in 1980.  Notice, I have inserted Abbey’s name in this prayer.
You can double click on the photo above to read or read below.

Excerpt of Dr. Dobson’s pamphlet:

…The second concept in my dad’s letter was the one that ended my parental complacency. He helped me realize that it is possible for mothers and fathers to love and revere God while systematically losing their children. You can go to church three times a week, serve on its governing board, attend the annual picnic, pay your tithes and make all the approved religious noises, yet somehow fail to communicate the real meaning of Christianity to the next generation.
This mission of introducing one’s children to the Christian faith can be likened to a three-man relay race. First, your father runs his lap around the track, carrying the baton, which represents the gospel of Jesus Christ. At the appropriate moment, he hands the baton to you, and you begin your journey around the track. Then finally, the time will come when you must get the baton safely in the hands of your child. But as any track coach will testify, relay races are won or lost in the transfer of the baton. There is a critical moment when all can be lost by a fumble or miscalculation. The baton is rarely dropped on the back side of the tract when the runner has it firmly in his grasp. If failure is to occur, it will likely happen in the exchange between generations!
According to the Christian values which govern my life, my most important reason for living is to get the baton–the gospel–safely in the hands of my children. Of course, I want to place it in as many other hands as possible, and I’m deeply devoted to the ministry to families that God has given me. Nevertheless, my number one responsibility is to evangelize my own children. In the words of my dad, everything else appears “pale and washed out” when compared with that fervent desire. Unless my son and daughter grasp the faith and take it with them around the track, it matters little how fast they run.
The urgency of this mission has taken Shirley and me to our knees since before the birth of our first child. That is why we find ourselves in prayer, week after week, uttering this familiar petition:

Lord, here we are again. You know what we need even before we ask, but let us say it one more time. When You consider the many requests we have made of You through the years… regarding our health and my ministry and the welfare of our loved ones… please put this supplication at the top of the list: keep the circle of our little family unbroken when we stand before You on the Day of Judgment. Compensate for our mistakes and failures as parents, and counteract the influences of an evil world that would undermine the faith of our children. And especially, Lord, we ask for Your involvement when our son and daughter stand at the crossroads, deciding whether or not to walk the Christian path. They will be beyond our care at that moment, and we humbly ask You to be there. Send a significant friend or leader to help them choose the right direction. They were Yours before they were born, and now we give them back to You in faith, knowing that You love them even more than we do.

A College Collage

By Lorraine

No new outfit.  No walking to the bus stop.  No lunch boxes.  None of that little girl first day of school stuff.
I’m lucky she let me snap a few pictures at the kitchen table.
This morning she’s about to drive herself to the local community college in her new (well, new to her 1996) car that she bought herself and pays insurance on, with her new drivers license and a satchel of pre-owned text books.
First class at 10 am, home by 4:20 pm, work at 6 to 12.
It’s starting to look like a grown-up world.
And this mom (and Dad) prays continually that God will put a hedge of protection around her and draw her ever closer to Him..
