Cambrie In Mom-Mom’s vintage Christening Dress

By Lorraine

While watching our sweet, baby granddaughter, Cambrie the other day, I dressed her in the Christening dress that belonged to me. Then I made a picture to look like an old cabinet photo.
Irresistibly hug-able, this little one is 6 weeks old already!
Here I am wearing the dress as my Godmother holds me in the bright sun.

Left-Handed People

By Lorraine

Are you left-handed? There aren't too many. Here are a few interesting facts and a list of some famous people who are also left-handed.
For the past few days, Pop-Pop has been overseeing Keri Jill with her homeschool lessons.
Pop-Pop thinks it’s pretty special that he, Keri and Keri’s Mommy are all left-handed.

Mrs. Vogel’s Scherben from Dorie Greenspan

By Lorraine

Scherben… isn’t that a fun word. It is German for shards which could describe the shape of this twisted, puffy piece of dough that is fried and then tossed in cinnamon sugar and topped with a dusting of confectioners sugar.

My granddaughter, Keri came by after church on Sunday and decided she’d like to spend a couple of days with us. She was delighted to help with this new Dorie recipe.

Dorie describes these cookies as fried dough that is crisp, firm and messy, in a fun kind of way, from the puffs of confectioner sugar. They hint of a funnel cake flavor/texture and they do need a generous amount of sugar to be enjoyable. I tried baking a few and they came out okay but not as tasty as when fried.
Keri’s opinion: “I like them!”
~*~

Mrs. Vogel’s Scherbe

Ingredients
1 tablespoon unsalted butter, at room temperature
Big pinch of sugar
Little pinch of salt
1 large egg, at room temperature
1 cup all purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
3-4 tablespoons hot water

Cinnamon sugar and confectioners’ sugar, for dusting
Flavorless oil, such as canola or sunflower, for deep frying

Working in a medium bowl with a wooden spoon or a large rubber spatula, beat the butter, sugar and salt until smooth and creamy. Add the egg and beat – the mixture will look curdled, but that’s ok. Mix the flour and baking powder together and pour them into the bowl, then stir until most of the flour is moistened. The dough will look like coarse, clumpy meal. Add 3 tablespoons hot water and continue to stir until the dough comes together. If you’ve still got dry portions, sprinkle over a little more water. Keep stirring – you’ll have a moist dough that might be a bit shaggy.

Reach into the bowl and knead the dough just until it smooths out and comes together. Gather the dough into a ball, wrap it in plastic and chill for at least 1 hour. (The dough can be kept in the refrigerator overnight if it’s more convenient.)

Line a baking sheet with plastic wrap. Cut the dough in half. Working with one half at a time, on a well-floured surface, and keeping both sides of the dough floured, roll the dough into a very thin rectangle – try to make it about 12 x 8 inches, but don’t worry if it’s not the right size or if it’s lopsided; scherben can be any size, and shape. If you keep the work surface well floured and turn the dough so it’s not sticking and so you’re rolling on both sides, you’ll find that it is very easy to roll and that you can roll it paper thin. Mark off 1-inch strips with a ruler and cut the strips with a pastry wheel or pizza cutter – using a zigzag pastry wheel makes pretty cookies. Cut the strips crosswise in half, then, using a small knife, cut a lengthwise slit about 1 1/2 inches long in each strip. Place the strips on the lined baking sheet and cover them with another piece of plastic wrap. Roll and cut the other half of the dough and lay those cookies over the first batch. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour. (If it’s more convenient, these can stay in the fridge for a day.)

GETTING READY TO FRY: Line a baking sheet with a triple thickness of paper towels and put it close to the stove. Fill one sugar duster or strainer with cinnamon sugar and another with confectioners’ sugar. Pour at least 4 inches of oil into a deep saucepan (or use an electric deep-fryer) and heat the oil to 350 degrees F, as measured on a deep-fat-frying thermometer.

Drop 4 to 6 strips into the pan (don’t crowd the pan) and fry until the undersides are golden, then turn and fry the other sides; each batch will take 2 to 3 minutes. Lift the cookies out of the oil on a perforated skimmer, allowing excess oil to drip back into the pan, then turn the cookies out onto the baking sheet to drain. Put in another batch to fry, and while they are frying, turn the cookies that are draining so the other sides can drain. Then, while the cookies are still hot and slightly damp from the oil, dust both sides with cinnamon sugar. Continue until all the dough is fried.
Just before serving, dust the scherben with confectioners’ sugar.

Church Christmas Living Nativity “I Know That Wiseman!”

By Lorraine

Our church began a outdoor Living Nativity many years ago on a small scale back in the early 1990’s. Over the years it has grown considerably and now, weather permitting, runs three weekends (7 nights) and has had as many as 14,000 visitors come through in one year.There are 13 scenes beginning with Creation and ending with Jesus ascending into the clouds with a promise to return.

Our family has greatly enjoyed helping in many capacities from baking cookies (up to 50,000 are served each year), including running a projector, being a guide, a greeter, a “mingler”, helping to set-up/take-down, helping in costumes and being a cast member.

For many years my husband was a wiseman. In this scene, the three Magi enter from the right to inquire of Herod “where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him”.
After leaving Herod, the wisemen circle around the back of the scene and re-enter on the left where they knock on the door of a carpenter and his wife. The curtain is drawn aside and the toddler Jesus emerges with his mother, Mary.

Delightful Days and Cozy Winter Moments with Grandchildren

By Lorraine

While Mommy was in the hospital, Mom-Mom spent every moment playing with these two little cherubs…
running the village trains …

watching snowflakes dance and twirl above the bed…

dreaming of dancing sugarplums….

enjoying the warmth of the fireplace…

chillin’ while watching a Christmas show…

and sipping hot chocolate by the fireplace each night before bed.

Gentle Jesus, meek and mild

Gentle Jesus, meek and mild,
look upon a little child;
pity my simplicity,
suffer me to come to thee.

Fain I would to thee be brought,
dearest God, forbid it not;
give me, dearest God, a place
in the kingdom of thy grace.

Lamb of God, I look to thee;
thou shalt my example be;
thou art gentle, meek, and mild;
thou wast once a little child.

Fain I would be as thou art;
give me thine obedient heart;
thou art pitiful and kind,
let me have thy loving mind.

Let me, above all, fulfill
God my heavenly Father’s will;
never his good Spirit grieve;
only to his glory live.

Thou didst live to God alone;
thou didst never seek thine own;
thou thyself didst never please:
God was all thy happiness.

Loving Jesus, gentle Lamb,
in thy gracious hands I am;
make me, Savior, what thou art,
live thyself within my heart.

Charles Wesley, 1742

Thanksgiving Day Memories with Breakfast and Dinner

By Lorraine

This beautiful buffet was prepared by our dear son-in-law, Josh. He’s not only a whiz behind a computer but also behind a grill pan. This yummy pumpkin pancake breakfast is becoming his trademark and much enjoyed as we watched on TV, the balloon floats and marching bands in the Philadelphia Thanksgiving Day Parade.Lots of snugglin’ with grandbabies! Also spent a little time looking at the tiny baby girl ensemble that awaits a new arrival due in just a couple of weeks.Continue Reading

Raking, Running & Relaxin’ with Keri and Raider

By Lorraine

Spent a delightful weekend with dear little Keri

After two sweeps of the rake, Keri declared raking was “hard work” and she’d much rather make lovely bouquets of the dried Sedum I was tossing in the leaf pile.

Rolling in the huge mountain of leaves was also a fun alternative.
But the most fun of all was running up and down the sidewalk with Raider!
Raider loved every moment!

We also did a lot of…A stick-to-your-ribs breakfast for lots of energy to rake all of those leaves!

And then we enjoyed a very sweet movie…

UP

This video trailer doesn’t show the sweet, loving relationship between Mr Carl Fredrickson and his wife Ellie but it is a precious part of the movie.
Note: The Bad guy really is ruthless to the core!
My opinion: I Love this movie! (and if you’re like me, you might just shed a tear or two)

Vintage Mid-Century Childhood Table and Chair Set

By Lorraine

This little vintage table and chairs set has been in almost continued use for nearly 50 years. I received it as a Christmas gift when I was a small child. The chrome and Formica, mid-century child’s version was similar to the set used in my parents kitchen. This photo shows my older sister and brother pretending to enjoy a tea party with me when I first receive it.

My daughter, Jamie was telling me how happy she is that her son, Noah comes home from  kindergarten and excitedly tells her all about his day. She expected such conversations from her daughter but heard boys tend to be less open to sharing such detail.

We reminisced when she and her twin sister would arrive home from kindergarten and would clamor to tell me every detail of their time away. The three of us would sit at a child-sized table and chair set that was given to me when I was three years old. We ate our lunch together and listened with great delight about the happenings of the day.

 When I outgrew playtime, the table was used for a sturdy storage table and the chairs used as step stools. When my own children came along, its intended purpose resumed and the little table remained in our kitchen for wee ones to eat and play.

Our twins, Jill, Jamie and cousin, Katie 1983.

Still strong and in service as two of our grandchildren sit at it waiting for their Thanksgiving food. This photo was taken in 2005.

Another grandchild is old enough to join those who have sat on the chairs at the little table, this time for Christmas dinner in 2006.

This is a table similar to the one my parents had

There’s A New Name Written Down In Glory…

By Lorraine

…and it’s Ryan’s!

The kids were in the tub and Ryan (age 6) and Brenna (almost 5) were talking about heaven with each other. Jill (their mom) asked if they remembered how to get to heaven. Ryan explained that after you die you ask Jesus into your heart. Jill gently corrected that you need to ask Jesus into your heart before you die.

With great excitement, Ryan responded,

“Does that mean I can ask Him into my heart right NOW?”

So, after his bath was finished, and spending time with his daddy answering some questions to determine his understanding about such an important decision, Ryan prayed to His Savior.

The next morning at breakfast, Ryan asked Brenna if she wanted to go to heaven and if so, he would tell her how and help her to pray 🙂
Shaela, Ryan and Brenna
Ryan in Ocean City, NJ this past August

A new Name In Glory I was once a sinner, but I came Pardon to receive from my Lord: This was freely given, and I found That He always kept His word. Chorus There’s a new name written down in glory, And it’s mine, O yes, it’s mine! And the white robed angels sing the story, “A sinner has come home.” For there’s a new name written down in glory, And it’s mine, O yes, it’s mine! With my sins forgiven I am bound for Heaven, Never more to roam. I was humbly kneeling at the cross, Fearing naught but God’s angry frown; When the heavens opened and I saw That my name was written down! In the Book ’tis written, “Saved by Grace,” O the joy that came to my soul! Now I am forgiven, and I know By the blood I am made whole!

If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Jesus from the dead, you shall be saved; for with the heart man believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.
Romans 10:9-10
