when you take a boy fishing…

By Lorraine

he concentrates on everything his PopPop says to catch his first fish
then littlest sister picks up a pole, casts the line and in an instant, gleefully catches her first fish
before you know it, another sister takes a turn and catches her first fish
then somehow, a friendly competition begins as his mom and dad try to out-fish each other
{but mom has the advantage of fishing this same lake a gazillion times when her dad brought her as a kid}
someone (Aunt Abbey) determines to get that BIG one everyone sees swimming near the water edge
(but settles for a small sunnie)
there are lots of laughs over yucky worms and  hearing dad moan as he untangles lines
and messy moments pulling the hook out of the fish before tossing him back
(not to mention the expression of someone when a flipping fish splatters, splashes and slaps about their face)
when you take a boy fishing
everyone has a good time

a day in the city

By Lorraine

Wondering how we got back across the river?
We could have turned and headed right back over the bridge the way we came, but we had more plans.
We walked from the base of the bridge through Old City to a sweet cafe located at Welcome Park where we enjoyed General Tso’s Chicken and finally rested.  We planned to do most of our walking prior to lunch keeping the end of our adventure a little easier.

Walking the Ben Franklin Bridge

By Lorraine

When our grandson, Ryan arrived from New York with his family for a visit, he had two requests.  Walking the Ben Franklin Bridge and to go fishing with PopPop. Today was beautiful, so we put on our sneakers and set out for a long day of walking.

together

By Lorraine

An impromptu overnight visit from Jill and family was super special!
They were returning from a week-long vacation in Myrtle Beach and made the 10-hour drive to our home to rest up before continuing another 5.5 hours to their NY home the next day.
See the center photo above… Ryan happily completed his first 5-mile run with his mom!
We made the most of their time here by having all of the cousins together on this hot, humid day.
Since it was another stormy day, the boys laughed and played on their various devices.
And the girls played dress-up and giggled a lot
Chloe tried to sweet-talk PopPop into giving her the cell phone
Abbey had just a few okay hours after her wisdom teeth extractions before a week long time of great discomfort. Her face is puffy in these photos taken at the Gazebo on Main Street of our town.

Ryan’s Birthday

By Lorraine

Last night we celebrated Ryan’s 10th birthday at his Aunt Jamie’s
all ten of our grandchildren around the table
then cake and presents
It was a very warm summer-like evening (after snow and chilly weather a couple weeks ago) and the kids were playing out on the front lawn.
Shaela called to me to come outside and see this little one, obviously wanting to be part of the fun, peeking out the window from her crib.
Usually we take just the birthday child on a special outing but wanting to spend time with Jill and her family while they are visiting, we all went to Valley Forge today.
The weather was perfect and the kids had a great time

Lily White’s Party

By Lorraine

Lily's White's Party is a sweet poem that my husband's mom recited to him as a child. Our children now shares it with our grandchildren. FREE PrintableLily White’s Party…

Our daughter, Jill was telling me how recently she used a saying with her children that she remembered her dad saying to her as a child as she and her sisters prepared for bedtime.  She knew he learned it from his mom and wondered where it came from. John would tell the girls, “Time for Kitty White’s Party”. Continue Reading

With Our NY Kids

By Lorraine

A few days after Christmas, John and I traveled to New York to spend some time with our daughter, Jill, Brad and their children, Ryan, Brenna and Shaela.
Our 5 1/2-hour drive turned into an eight+ one but we finally made it safe and sound.

Making a Brushed Metal Look Chalkboard Serving Tray

By Lorraine

Make a chalkboard and serving tray with a brushed-metal look detailed DIY how-to instructions. Great housewarming gift for newlyweds.
Our daughter, Jill and husband, Brad recently moved into a new home. Well, actually their home was built in 1917 making it a 95 year-old new home.
She wants a serving tray for an ottoman she is using as a coffee table. Her dad and I worked together to make a brushed metal-look chalkboard serving tray.

Braided Chicken Almondine

By Lorraine

This post is for our daughter, Jill.
A recipe she grew up with and now often makes when having friends over because it is tasty, easy and pretty to serve. It is her go-to recipe (when she can find it)
Now she won’t have to pay her dad a dollar for calling (again) for the recipe.
🙂
That is what he charges for repeatedly reading a recipe.
Come to think of it, he has never seen one penny of this tab.
Braided Chicken Almandine
(the spelling on the original  Pillsbury recipe)

PRINT RECIPE
INGREDIENTS
Heat oven to 350
Filling:
1 1/2 cups chopped, cooked chicken
3/4 cup shredded cheddar
1/2 cup sour cream
1/3 cup chopped, slivered almonds
1Tbl Dijon mustard
1/4 tsp pepper
1 clove garlic, minced
1 can refrigerated crescent rolls
1 egg, beaten (if multiple recipes are made, 1 egg is still enough)
2 Tbl slivered almonds
(Because we like peas, I toss some in as well.  About 1/2 cup)

DIRECTIONS
In large bowl, combine filling ingredients. Separate dough into 2 long rectangles. Place on ungreased cookie sheet with long sides overlapping 1/2”. Firmly press perforations and edges to seal. Press to form 14×9 rectangle. Spoon chicken mixture in 3” strip lengthwise down center of dough. Cut 1” strips of dough from chicken to edge. Fold strips of dough at an angle alternating sides. Brush with egg, sprinkle with almonds.

Bake at 350 for 30 to 35 minutes or until golden brown
8 servings

Summertime

By Lorraine

Sweet moments in our Sweet NY-er kids summertime…

Ryan was picked to play in the All-Star tournament.  His team was undefeated and won the Championship!
He may be one of the littlest guys on the team (#3) but he brings a lot of skill and talent at center field and 2nd base. (During regular season, he played pitcher, short stop, catcher and 3rd)

Forth of July ~ love Rudy’s puppy perspective of a parade
the following two photos are from WKTV

Comment from Jill on her fb post: I didn’t feel like I was
dying even though I look like it 😉 Oh…and contrary to the clock, my time was
1:41:10. Didn’t start until 11 min after the Kenyans. They were almost done
when I started 🙂
Once again, our daughter, Jill ran in the Boilermaker race in Utica, NY where nearly 14,000 runners participated in the nine point three mile race.
This is the second time she ran and this time to raise funds for an ultrasound for CareNet Pregnancy Center of Central New York, an organization she works for. She raised over $2000!
She works as the director of abstinence education program.
Looking less pained, Jill is on the far right in this photo

By Lorraine

She’s a leap year baby
delivered by a 10 year old leapling doctor (age 40 in regular years)
She doesn’t have a name yet

and distance didn’t keep Jamie’s twin sister, Jill from the miracle of birth!
