Let’s Cook French Cookbook Review

By Lorraine

When contacted to review Let’s Cook French, A Family Cookbook by Claudine Pépin, I knew it would be exciting for both myself and my granddaughter, Keri. This almost 13-year old is super excited about cooking as well as everything French!

Claudine is the daughter of world-renowned chef, Jacques Pépin and has partnered with her father preparing delicious meals and sharing cooking techniques in various venues.
This book is the result of a family project with all members having a part. Claudine’s husband, Rollie helped choose the recipes. Jacques and Claudine’s daughter, Shorey did the lovely artwork. Inspiration and love of home and family came from Claudine’s mom, Gloria.
These favorite foods of the Pépin family give young cooks a delicious introduction to cooking French while providing cooks of all ages a classic collection the whole family will enjoy.

Thirty good-food recipes from start, entree, sides and finish including a seasonal menu suggesting the time of year you might enjoy these dishes.

I am always thrilled to have a grandchild in the kitchen with me. The little ones sit on the counter and like to pour and stir (and taste, of course) and the bigger ones often surprise me with how quickly they learn and their capabilities. But it is the memories and conversation that makes this time so special. If you have a budding chef, boy or girl, I recommend Let’s Cook French. The recipes aren’t difficult, the flavors not too sophisticated for kids and the time together is priceless.

Keri spent the Memorial Day weekend with us. She enjoyed reading through the cookbook and then preparing two of the recipes with me.
We made Gratin Dauphinois (Potato and Cheese Gratin) and while it was baking, Keri whisked together the Vinaigrette. In addition to dressing a green salad it is delicious on fresh green beans making them extra tasty and special.  Make it up and it will last for a week in the fridge, ready for a whole week of meals.

Keri peeled and buttered

 washed and poured
heated

 measured and sprinkled
The house filled with a wonderful aroma as the dish baked and then this fabulous-ness came from the oven
Making the Vinaigrette

Keri wanted to chop the shallots not realizing just how potent they are ~ ouch!

After adding all of the ingredients to a canning jar, a vigorous shake was all it took to finish.
Then Keri and I dined together on the patio enjoying the fruit of her labor.

Keri’s Cookbook review:

This cookbook, titled, Let’s Cook French, a Family Cookbook, by Claudine Pépin is very interesting. I like how, if it is on a book shelf, you definitely want to take a look. The illustration’s are eye-popping. I also love the way they have a special note for kids. The recipes are written in both English and French. I was very excited to start dancing in the kitchen making dishes from my favorite city of Paris. There are many recipes that I think are cool, like the Salad Nicoise.

When I tried to cook, the recipe was easy and fun to make. I enjoyed the cookbook and the results were delicious.

I would definitely recommend Let’s Cook French a Family Cookbook to anyone who loves tasty French food to eat and make.

Potato and Cheese Gratin
Source: Let’s Cook French by Claudine Pepin
PRINT RECIPE
serves 8
INGREDIENTS:
1 Tbs. unsalted butter
2 pounds potatoes (Yukon Gold are the best; be sure it is a boiling potato)
2 cups whole milk
1/2 cups heavy cream
2 garlic cloves, smashed, peeled, and minced (about 1 Tbs.)
1 Tbs. picked fresh thyme leaves (about 7 sprigs)
1 tsp. kosher salt
1/2 tsp. freshly ground black pepper
3 oz. Gruyere or Swiss cheese, grated (about 1 cup)
PREPARATION:

Preheat oven to 375 degrees (190C)

Coat a 9 x 13-inch glass dish with the butter.

Peel the potatoes and wash in cold water. Do not let the potatoes soak in the water; it will remove the starch needed to thicken the milk. Slice the potatoes 1/4-inch thick into an 8-quart saucepan.

Add the milk, cream, garlic, thyme, salt and pepper and bring to a boil over medium heat. Stir often to prevent scorching.

Pour the potato and milk mixture into the buttered roasting dish. Sprinkle with the grated cheese.

Set on a cookie sheet and bake in the oven for approximately 1 hour or until the potatoes are fork tender.

Let stand 15 minutes before serving.

Visiting the Petersen House where President Lincoln Died

By Lorraine

During our Washington, DC trip, we visited the Petersen House, a 19th-century federal style row house located at 516 10th Street NW.
On the night of April 14, 1865, the mortally wounded President Abraham Lincoln was carried to a back bedroom of this building that was then a boarding house.

always a beautiful song

By Lorraine

Here is a glimpse of some of the music playing at our house…

I peeked into Abbey’s room while she was working on an assignment for her digital animation class and found it very interesting to watch her progress.  Yes, she has two black lights and a blackboard bolted to the wall, black-out coverings on her windows and only about 3-feet of empty floor space in her bedroom with way too much stuff bursting out everywhere.
but, she loves what she’s doing!
Jared enthusiastically shows John each step completed as he creates a computer game.
My favorite $3.00 bench purchased from a garage sale 25 years ago and painted and repaired dozens of times got to the point that John just couldn’t fix it and keep it fixed. Mostly it was the arms that took the brunt of the abuse but even the legs were not staying together any longer.
{ha, that sounds like my body recently}
We considered making a porch swing from the bench but I really wanted it back in the kitchen to hold all of those little grandchildren. So we sent it off to a furniture maker for a complete overhaul .
Please, please, little bench, stay strong!
We have been moving furniture, boxes and rearranging rooms as Erin and Jared return home. The nursery has become Jared’s room and the guest room is now Erin’s room. Making them feel loved and comfortable, and though sad about the circumstances, we love having them home.
The painting above Jared’s bed was something my sister gave me when she moved out of her house last fall.  I wish I had taken a photo of the before when it was in shades of bright green.  I knew when I saw it I would paint over the canvas. Wanting something masculine for this room, I went to work. Nothing artistic but it works to fill a big blank wall.
We’ve done lots of yard work and home repairs.
Weeding, planting, painting, edging, raking, digging, dividing, potting, sweeping, blowing, washing and, well, you know.  You are probably doing the same things at your house.
Who would had thought removing 20-year old, dead boxwood bushes would be so hard! Eighteen in all.
The last five with some much appreciated help from Jared.
Always the sentry, Raider keeps watch while we work.
Now, it hasn’t been all work.
My streptocarpus is blooming profusely in our bathroom.
Jared, the oldest grandson, and Keri, our oldest granddaughter, had a great time together. Last weekend we went to his high school spring musical, Mary Poppins. The following day, after getting those bushes out, Jared tried his best to hit Keri’s wild wiffle ball pitches (one that had to be rescued from the roof) and they had some impressive exercise challenges. As if push-ups aren’t hard enough, imagine doing hand clap push-ups! {The thought takes me back to the old broken bench feeling}
Our favorite time to visit Brigadier General William C. Doyle Memorial Cemetery is Memorial Day weekend when all of the graves are decorated with an American flag. Both my parents are interred here. A perfect place to find a bench, remember loved ones and the Veterans that gave their service for our freedom.
Haven’t had much time with the littles through all of these changes but John snapped this pic of Chloe sleeping soundly the last time she was over. Playing it tiring work!
He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God.
Psalm 40:3

Happy 4th!

By Lorraine

Battle Hymn of the Republic
Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord
He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored,
He has loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword
His truth is marching on.
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
His truth is marching on.
I have seen Him in the watch-fires of a hundred circling camps
They have builded Him an altar in the evening dews and damps
I can read His righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps
His day is marching on.
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
His truth is marching on.
I have read a fiery gospel writ in burnish`d rows of steel,
“As ye deal with my contemnors, so with you my grace shall deal;”
Let the Hero, born of woman, crush the serpent with his heel
Since God is marching on.
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
His truth is marching on.
He has sounded from the trumpet that shall never call retreat
He is sifting out the hearts of men before His judgment-seat
Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer Him! Be jubilant, my feet!
Our God is marching on.
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
His truth is marching on.
In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea,
With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me:
As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free,
While God is marching on.
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
His truth is marching on.

Chocolate Brownie Trifle

By Lorraine

Top an easy brownie truffle parfait with chocolate pudding and whipped cream with little red, white and blue star sprinkles for a patriotic themed dessert. What to do when you have a recipe fail? My intention was to make some amazing brownie bites that our friend brought to our end-of-year Bible study. She told me she followed a recipe from her granddaughter and it sounded super simple. I’m not sure what went wrong but I had a problem on my hands. I had a brownie bites bomb but a quick-thinking, chocolate brownie trifle saved the day!
