At first, I titled this post, Birthday Gifts from Little Hearts. It wasn’t right because the gifts came from LITTLE people with BIG hearts.
Birthday plans
After a quick breakfast, we spent the morning tackling our list of responsibilities. We took a break for a late-afternoon lunch. Then, it was back to work moving at what seemed like a snail’s pace.
Our daughter, Jamie invited us to her home for coffee and dessert that evening. I felt the temptation to pass and continue on, chiseling away at our to-do list. Not wanting to dismiss her thoughtfulness, we got into the car that evening and drove over. As we pulled up to their house, we were met with smiling faces as the kids ran to the car to greet us, confirming the blessings we would have missed had we stayed home.
Passing through to the kitchen, I couldn’t help but notice some gift bags on the dining room table. Chloe and Jethro were sitting on the table too, with gushy smiles on their cherub-like faces. They could hardly contain their excitement. They had gifts for me. Gifts especially created and chosen, by them, just for me.
Gifts from the heart
The joy in their countenance was a gift in itself. They even squabbled over who’s gift I should open first. It was decided I would open Jethro’s as he pushed a gift bag toward me. That grinning face with his one adorable dimple melted away the cares of the day.
As if that wasn’t enough of a treasure, she made a game for us to play. Complete with a slime pond with icky bubbles, a monster and the gross items he likes to devour like a moldy ice cream cone and stinky socks. All of this came in a gift bag she embellished with artwork.
Me and my Grandma Gift
Yes, I am dreadfully behind but I’ll catch up. Maybe. My to-do list that is too long will probably never get shorter. But I will enjoy every gift that comes my way. Every gesture of kindness. Every cheeky smile. Every conversation. Every hug from outstretched arms big and small. Every givers gift. Because, really, that is what’s important.
