Christmas Tree Forest Cake

1 cake mix in desired flavor, baked and cooled

Frosting:

  • ½ cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 2 cups confectioners’ sugar, sifted
  • 1 ½ teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 3 drops food coloring, or as needed (Optional)

Cream butter in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment until smooth and fluffy.

Gradually beat in confectioners’ sugar until fully incorporated.

Beat in vanilla extract.

Add milk and beat for an additional 3 to 4 minutes.

Add food coloring, if using, and beat for thirty seconds until smooth or until desired color is reached.

Use immediately or store buttercream in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days.

Cupcake being frosted with buttercream icing using a piping bag on a cooling rack.

Chocolate Christmas Tree Cake Toppers

What you will need:
  • Pretzel sticks
  • Green candy melts (1 bag made at least 25 trees)
  • Holiday sprinkles
  • Flaked coconut
DIRECTIONS:
  • Melt green candy melts according to package directions. I like to use a plastic bottle for less mess but you can use a piping bag if you prefer. Using the microwave, just melt in bottle with lid removed, stirring with a skewer after each heating time.

NOTE: You will need to refill the bottle and melt additional candy melts as you continue making the trees.
  • I find it helps to tap the spout of the inverted bottle on the counter so the melted candy melts flow easily as you create each tree.
  • Cover a baking sheet with silicone mat or waxed paper. Place pretzel sticks on baking sheet, spacing them 2 to 3 inches apart.
  • Squeeze or pipe the melted candy melts over the pretzel stick in the shape of a tree then immediately top the tree with sprinkles. Make the trees thick with fewer “branches” or thinner with more “branches” depending how fast you move the bottle. After a few tries, you’ll find your groove and favorite look. The trees aren’t as fragile as they appear even after lifting them from the waxed paper lined pan and storing.
  • Cool pan in refrigerator a few minutes until the trees have fully cooled and hardened.
  • Store between sheets of waxed paper in an air-tight container. I kept mine in the refrigerator and inserted then into the center of the cupcakes just before serving.

Make holiday dessert look fun and festive with easy-to-make chocolate Christmas tree toppers. Just pipe melted chocolate onto pretzel sticks. Quick and easy recipe how-to.

Easy to make, Chocolate Pretzel Christmas Tree Cupcake Toppers look so festive atop coconut frosted cupcakes. A yummy and decorative Christmas treat.
